Baicalin is a flavonoid compound extracted from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. It is a light yellow powder at room temperature with a bitter taste. Hardly soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in chloroform and nitrobenzene, almost insoluble in water, soluble in hot acetic acid. It is green when it meets ferric chloride, and an orange precipitate is formed when it meets lead acetate. Dissolved in alkali and ammonia water, it appears yellow at first, and then turns black brown soon.
