Artificial leaves

  • We have embedded chloroplasts from plants into silk proteins and then mixed them with algae cells with strong adsorption power to develop artificial leaves. For example, it only needs a little light and water to carry out photosynthesis, it can also purify the air, and its efficiency in generating oxygen is nearly half higher than that of ordinary leaves, which may be applied to space travel or immigration in the future to solve the problem of lack of oxygen in space. At the same time, artificial leaves will not wither; using them can also create some crafts, such as special leaf lamps or table decorations can be achieved in the lighting or viewing while releasing oxygen.
  • In addition, we can combine microfluidics with the natural photosynthetic membrane of spinach for the development of "synthetic chloroplasts" that mimic the complex and realistic photosynthesis process.

Synthetic photosynthetic cells

We combined a cell-free protein synthesis system with small proteoliposomes composed of purified ATP synthase and bacterial retinoids in a giant single-cell vesicle to synthesize proteins through photosynthetic production of ATP. The ATP produced by photosynthesis is used as a substrate for transcription and energy for translation, ultimately driving the synthesis of the constituent proteins of bacterial retinoids or ATP synthases, the original basic components of proteoliposomes. The synthesized photosynthetic bacterial retinoid is integrated with part of the ATP synthase into the artificial photosynthetic organelle, enhancing its ATP photosynthetic activity through positive feedback of the product. We used the synthetic photosynthetic cell system to set the research direction for constructing a self-sufficient artificial cell.
