Sturgeon Gene Editing

Sturgeon Gene Editing

Sturgeon is an ancient group in the fish family, known as a living fossil of fish, is a valuable natural resource. There are 27 species of sturgeon in 2 families and 6 genera worldwide, all of which are large, long-lived fishes.

The nutritional value of sturgeon is very high, sturgeon meat is delicious, rich in 8 kinds of essential amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids, sturgeon eggs processed from the caviar of very high quality, known as the "black pearl", is the "world's three delicacies" along with foie gras, truffles. Sturgeon has not only food value, but also high medicinal and ornamental value, and is a special fish with high economic value.

The sturgeon is a subcooled fish with nine natural ranges, namely the east coast of the Pacific Ocean, the Great Lakes region of North America, the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, the Mississippi River basin and the Gulf of Mexico, the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, the Caspian Sea region, Siberia and the Arctic Ocean basin, the Heilongjiang River and the Sea of Japan, the Yangtze River and the Pearl River.

Due to overfishing and damage to the aquatic ecosystem, wild sturgeon resources have declined dramatically, and many sturgeons are even in an endangered state. The genetic breeding of sturgeon and the cultivation of sturgeon species are the key to meet the growing demand for sturgeon products and protecting the wild sturgeon resources. In this regard, Lifeasible has established a sturgeon gene-editing technology service platform to provide effective technical means for sturgeon gene function research and genetic improvement breeding.

TALEN technology services

Lifeasible has established a precise editing technology for sturgeon exogenous genes, which can provide powerful technical services for the functional research of sturgeon genes and genetic improvement of sturgeon breeds.

We mixed the target gene plasmid and TALEN mRNA for the target locus in proportion and then introduced them into sturgeon I-cell stage fertilized embryos by microinjection, which can obtain sturgeon embryos with a high survival rate and exogenous target gene mutation rate.

CRISPR/Cas9 technology services

In addition to providing TALEN technology services, Lifeasible also offers a sturgeon CRISPR/ Cas9 gene-editing method, which is currently the newest and most popular technology method. This technology can also be used to study the functions of sturgeon genes and can be used to precisely modify the endogenous target genes of sturgeon and breed new genetically improved sturgeon breeding strains.

We mix Cas9 protein with target gRNA and inject it into the fertilization pore of the animal pole of sturgeon 1-cell stage fertilized eggs by microinjection. Sturgeon embryos with an 85% mutation rate of the target gene were obtained after incubation, and sturgeon embryos with mutation of target gene could be screened by PAGE method, thus establishing a platform for sturgeon target gene precision editing technology.
