Sialic acid is a naturally occurring carbohydrate. It was originally isolated from the submandibular gland mucin, hence the name. Sialic acid usually exists in the form of oligosaccharides, glycolipids, or glycoproteins. In the human body, the brain has the highest sialic acid content.
