Description
β-carotene is one of the carotenoids, which is an orange-yellow fat-soluble compound. β-carotene is the most ubiquitous and stable natural pigment in nature. Belongs to a family of natural chemicals such as carotene or carotenoids. It is found in abundance in plants, giving fruits and vegetables their rich yellow and orange hues.
Properties
The dilute solution of β-carotene is orange-yellow, and is easily soluble in organic solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform, and carbon disulfide. When the concentration of the solution increases, it turns orange, and it can be slightly reddish due to the polarity of the solvent. Instability to oxygen, heat and light. It is more stable in weak base.
Applications
Used in food industry, feed industry, medicine and cosmetics industry. At present, the methods used to obtain β-carotene include natural product extraction, chemical synthesis and microbial fermentation.
Storage
Kept out of sunlight or high temperature. Store in cool and dry places. Once opened,use it up quickly.
