Sulfur Dioxide Testing in Wine

Sulfur Dioxide Testing in Wine

Sulfur dioxide is the most common sulfur oxide; it is colorless, easily soluble in water, and has a pungent odor. Sulfur dioxide has been added to the wine brewing process for centuries. In addition, small amounts of sulfur dioxide are naturally produced during brewing. Sulfur dioxide plays a vital role in wine, such as stopping fermentation, sterilization, anti-oxidation, clarification, enhancement of color and phenolic content, and acidification. However, high levels can cause a sulfurous odor, which is detrimental to the flavor stability of the wine and toxic to humans. To ensure the quality of products and meet the needs of people for wine flavor and beer safety, it is essential to control the content of sulfur dioxide in wine.

Sulfur Dioxide Testing in Wine

Sulfur dioxide is a relatively low but essential component of wine. The World Health Organization stipulates that the maximum daily intake of sulfur dioxide by the human body should be controlled at 0.7 mg/kg. As one of the world's leading providers of wine hygiene testing services, Lifeasibe offers a wide range of methods to detect sulfur dioxide residues in wine, with some cutting-edge methods that can determine sulfur dioxide residues in wine with high accuracy, simplicity, speed, sensitivity, and low interference, which can fully meet the detection of residual sulfur dioxide in wine. Our laboratory will perform tests strictly following international standards and provide reliable analytical results.

We offer proven standard methods and other methods to test sulfur dioxide in wine for our customers to choose from. Our solutions meet the need for fast, simple, and accurate determination of sulfur dioxide in large quantities of wine.

  • Distillation Titration method
We use acid distillation to distill sulfur dioxide, absorb sulfur dioxide with lead acetate solution to produce PbSO3, release sulfur dioxide rapidly under concentrated acid, titrate with standard iodine solution, and calculate the sulfur dioxide content in the sample. We provide a one-stop solution from sample preparation, sample distillation to titration.
  • Gas Chromatography method
After sample treatment, the sample can volatilize sulfur dioxide using a headspace device at constant oven temperature for 50 minutes. It is fed into the gas chromatograph with high-purity nitrogen gas as a carrier to a hydrogen flame ionization detector for determination, and the measured value is obtained by comparison with a standard series solution.
  • Fluorescence method
  • Chemiluminescence method
  • Electrochemical method
  • Enzymatic method
  • Flow injection method
  • Intermittent chemical analysis technique
  • Ion chromatography
  • Gas diffusion membrane separation
  • Capillary electrophoresis
  • Various types of sensors

Our solutions for sulfur dioxide testing in wine have excellent reproducibility and accuracy for different types of wines, and the results are fully compliant with the standards. We aim to meet the requirements for the rapid detection of sulfur dioxide in various wines. Some of our methods are easy to use, fast and efficient, with high accuracy, making them a reliable choice.
